Rice terraces, ethnic villages and the roof of Indochina
Sapa is the highland town above the Muong Hoa valley, where Hmong, Dao and Tay villages sit among the most photographed rice terraces in Asia and the Fansipan cable car climbs to the highest peak in Indochina. It is reached by private car from Hanoi in about five hours, or by overnight train to Lao Cai.
September and early October are the golden harvest weeks; March to May and late September to November are the best trekking months. Winter can bring fog and frost.
